The cultural village of Tafi Atome has over 1000 residents and is located within the Hohoe District of the Volta Region of Ghana. The village is surrounded by a sacred grove which is home to one of the world’s only remaining populations of Mona monkeys. For the last 20 years, the village has successfully managed an award-winning ecotourism project which serves to protect the Sacred Forest and Monkey Sanctuary whilst raising money for the community through sustainable tourism. The project is managed by a local Tourism Management Committee, and has thus far raised funds to support its local schools, clinic, library and computer learning centre. The development of the cultural village has encouraged the preservation of traditional practices such as drumming and dancing, and informal performances are often organized for tourists visiting the monkey sanctuary.
